Benzyladenine in the Priming Solution Reduces Thermodormancy of Lettuce Seeds

چکیده

When lettuce seeds are imbibed and subjected to high temperature for periods of 72 h or more, dormancy known as thermodormaney is induced. Priming of three cultivars of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) seeds in 1% (w/v) K3P O4 for 20 h in the dark reduced thermodormaney. Addition of 100 mg 6-benzyladenine (BA)/liter to the priming solution increased germination in petri dishes at 35C in ‘Green Lakes’ from 65% in seeds that were primed without BA, to 92% when BA was added to the priming solution. In ‘South Bay’ these percentages were 24% and 86%, respectively. Seedling emergence was improved in other lots of ‘Green Lakes’ and ‘Montello’ using soilless mix.

Mechanism of seed priming in circumventing thermodormancy in lettuce.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv Minetto) seeds were primed in aerated solutions of 1% K(3)PO(4) or water at 15 degrees C in the dark for various periods of time to determine the manner by which seed priming bypasses thermodormancy. Seeds which were not primed did not germinate at 35 degrees C, whereas those which were primed for 20 h in 1% K(3)PO(4) or distilled H(2)O had up to 86% germination. T...

Interaction of carbon dioxide and ethylene in overcoming thermodormancy of lettuce seeds.

The combination of ethylene with CO(2) will completely overcome the thermodormancy of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seeds at 35 C. This combination is effective if it is added to seeds either at the start or after several days of imbibition. The action of ethylene is dependent upon the CO(2) level present in the atmosphere surrounding the seeds. When CO(2) is trapped by KOH the ethylene effect is...

Drying Rates following Priming Affect Temperature Sensitivity of Germination and Longevity of Lettuce Seeds

Seed priming (controlled hydration followed by drying) is used to alleviate high temperature inhibition of germination and improve seedling emergence of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and other species. However, seed priming can also reduce the longevity of seeds during dry storage. Alternative drying methods [i.e., slow drying or moisture content reduction (MCR) before drying] can extend seed lon...

Primed Lettuce Seeds Exhibit Increased Sensitivity to Moisture during Aging

The Ellis-Roberts seed viability equation is accepted as an accurate predictor of seed longevity over a range of storage temperatures and moisture contents (MC). One application of this model is to identify different combinations of seed MC and temperature that can result in similar seed storage lifetimes. The present study was conducted to determine whether the reduction in storage life of pri...

Quantitative trait loci associated with longevity of lettuce seeds under conventional and controlled deterioration storage conditions

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seeds have poor shelf life and exhibit thermoinhibition (fail to germinate) above ∼25°C. Seed priming (controlled hydration followed by drying) alleviates thermoinhibition by increasing the maximum germination temperature, but reduces lettuce seed longevity. Controlled deterioration (CD) or accelerated ageing storage conditions (i.e. elevated temperature and relative...
